Edge Computing vs Cloud Computing: When to Use Each
Edge runs code close to users for low latency. Cloud runs code close to data for heavy compute. Here's how to decide — and when to use both.

Use edge for static content, auth checks, and redirects. Use cloud for anything that touches a database. Most apps should use both layers.
What is edge computing?
Your code runs at 40+ locations worldwide instead of one data center. When a user in Tokyo makes a request, it's handled by a server in Tokyo — not Virginia.
Good for: Static pages, A/B test routing, authentication checks, geolocation redirects, header manipulation, image optimization, caching logic.
Bad for: Database queries, writes, transactions, anything that needs state.
What is cloud computing?
Your code runs in a centralized data center alongside your database, cache, and storage. All internal calls are sub-millisecond.
Good for: API endpoints, database operations, background jobs, compute-heavy tasks, anything stateful.
Bad for: Latency-sensitive static content delivery.

Hybrid architecture (the right answer for most apps)
Most production apps use both layers:
User → Edge (CDN + edge logic) → Cloud (API + database)Edge layer handles:

The edge computing trap
Cloudflare Workers and Vercel Edge Functions market edge as the default. But:
- Edge functions can't access your database without adding 50-200ms of cross-region latency
- Hyperdrive, connection poolers, and edge-compatible databases add complexity to solve a problem that "run your code next to your database" already solves
- V8 isolates (Workers) don't support the full Node.js runtime
- Edge cold starts can be slower than a well-scaled cloud service
The counterintuitive truth: running your API in the same data center as your database (5ms total) is usually faster than running it at the edge (1ms to user + 80ms to database = 81ms total).
FAQ
Do I need edge if I'm in one region?
For static assets, yes — your CDN still helps users far from your data center. For API responses, no — the overhead of edge routing isn't worth it.

When does edge make a real latency difference?
When your response is entirely self-contained (no database call) and sub-50ms matters — e.g., ad serving, A/B test routing, bot detection. For typical web apps, the difference between 20ms (edge) and 80ms (cloud) is imperceptible to users.
